Investing in Local Talent: Carolyn Nguyen’s Journey from Albuquerque to NYU

As a first-generation Vietnamese American, Carolyn Nguyen, known to many by her Vietnamese name, Bao Han, grew up watching her parents work tirelessly to create a better life for their family. Spending her childhood around her father’s mechanic shop in downtown Albuquerque, she became aware of the unique opportunities and challenges that shaped her community.

While her twin sister found a clear path in nursing, Carolyn spent her high school years searching for her own direction. It wasn’t until her first semester of college that she discovered her interest in economics. “I started to see the world around me, the people, the businesses, and the city,” she said. “That’s when I began focusing on economics.”

Motivated by a desire to make a difference, Carolyn applied for an internship with the City of Albuquerque Economic Development Department. She was drawn to the department’s mission to promote growth and opportunity for all parts of the city. “I knew this was the chance I’d been looking for to contribute in a meaningful way,” she explained.

During her internship, Carolyn gained hands-on experience supporting projects that drive Albuquerque’s economy forward. She developed valuable skills in research, data analysis, and professional communication. “This experience really helped me grow,” she shared. “I learned how to work with different teams, manage deadlines, and think critically about how economic policies affect local communities and small businesses.”

Her time with the department also gave her a clearer vision of her future. “I’m definitely interested in a career in government and development, but I also want to explore the finance side of economics,” she said. “This internship showed me that there are so many ways to apply what I’m learning in school to real-world challenges.”

As she prepares to continue her studies at New York University, Carolyn feels confident that the foundation she built in Albuquerque will serve her well. “Whether I eventually work in corporate finance or public policy, the skills and insights I’ve gained here will shape the way I approach my career,” she said.

Reflecting on her experience, Carolyn expressed her gratitude. “It’s been so fulfilling to not only build my professional skills but also to meet such inspiring and supportive people,” she said. “I’m excited to carry everything I’ve learned into the future.”
