Albuquerque Window Grant Helped 87 Businesses Recover from Vandalism

Between September 1 and December 31, 2024, the City of Albuquerque launched a short-term but impactful initiative to help small businesses recover from vandalism. The Window Grant Program provided financial relief to 87 business owners, covering the repair of 210 broken windows across the city.

In total, the City awarded or committed $200,000 in funding to ease the burden on businesses hit by property damage.

“This was a great program,” said Rosalinda Castaneda, owner of Wigs, Wigs, Wigs. “The funds came in really handy, and I am truly appreciative.”

Gabriel Jaureguiberry, who owns Ace Barbershop, added, “This has been a big help for small businesses like mine. I’m really thankful the City was there to help cover the cost of my broken window.”

Run in partnership between the Albuquerque Police Department and the Economic Development Department’s Small Business Office, the program reimbursed up to 80% of window replacement costs, with a cap of $5,000 per business. An additional $1,000 was available for businesses that opted for green or security glass.
Participants also completed the APD Business Crime Prevention Security Survey. Meanwhile, the City continued proactive crime-fighting efforts through its Real Time Crime Center and increased police patrols in vandalism-prone areas.

From salons and bakeries to barbershops, nonprofits, and comic book stores, the grant helped a wide range of businesses stay open and continue serving their neighborhoods.

“Replacing these windows helps keep businesses open and ensures they have the resources to recover,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We’ll continue looking for ways to support those impacted by crime and keep our communities strong.”
