Building Opportunity Citywide: Albuquerque’s Economic Development Team Earns Statewide Honors

On January 21, 2026, New Mexico IDEA recognized two members of the City of Albuquerque’s Economic Development Department for the work they’re doing to move the city forward, from landing transformational projects to strengthening the small business ecosystem.

Economic Development Director Max Gruner was named Economic Developer of the Year for his leadership in securing Pacific Fusion’s $1 billion research and manufacturing campus in Albuquerque. The project is expected to create more than 200 high-wage jobs, generate hundreds of construction jobs, and help position Albuquerque as a national leader in advanced energy innovation.

“These recognitions from New Mexico IDEA reflect the strength of Albuquerque’s economic development team,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “Max and Frankie are helping position our city for long-term growth while ensuring opportunity reaches businesses and communities citywide.”

Gruner emphasized that wins of this scale are never the work of one person. “This award reflects the incredible teamwork across the City and our partners,” Gruner said. “Economic development at this scale only happens when people are aligned around a shared vision for Albuquerque’s future.”

Sr. Economic Developer Frankie Hermosillo received New Mexico IDEA’s Staff Achievement Award for going above and beyond to expand support for Albuquerque entrepreneurs and small businesses. Her efforts included helping launch the City’s Business Resource Center and expanding access to technical assistance, making it easier for business owners to navigate City resources and get the help they need.

“Supporting small businesses means meeting people where they are and making City resources easier to access,” Hermosillo said. “I’m honored to be recognized and proud to work alongside colleagues who are deeply committed to building opportunity in every part of our city.”

Together, these statewide honors reflect an economic development approach that’s both ambitious and grounded: attracting major investment, supporting local entrepreneurs, and ensuring Albuquerque’s growth is innovative, inclusive, and built to last.
